Cartagena on the Caribbean Coast of #Colombia

Updated: Apr 14, 2021

*There is a german version below this english one*

In late November 2019 I took a flight to Cartagena in Colombia. I stayed on the North coast of Colombia for 7 weeks and got to know the area quite well. One of the highlights in the area is Tayrona national park, however it is very busy at peak times in December and January. That's because January is usually when Colombian people take their holidays. Colombians often travel from as far away as Bogota to go on holiday there. I spent the first 4 days in Cartagena staying at a hostel in the old town which had a cafe bar on the ground floor and the dorm rooms one floor up in a lovely balcony arrangement looking down onto the internal courtyard of the cafe seating. One level up there was a small roof area for sunbathing which was also really nice to sit in the warm evening air.

Plaza Santa Domingo is a square filled with restaurants and is also a wonderful place to spend the evening. It was just a couple of minutes walk away from the place I was staying. All of Cartagena old town is quite touristy and that's because it's very quaint and beautiful. It reminded me of the way Venice is because there are barely any locals left living in old Venice. If you enjoy photography, the old town is a great place to get some beautiful shots. There are plenty of locals selling trinkets, and thin looking horses pulling carts taking tourists for joy rides.

The old town is on the coast, and from cafe del mar at sunset there are lovely views of the modern section of Cartagena. The beaches in that area aren't the kind of place you would want to go to sunbathe or swim. For beach time, most people take a boat from the docks to Playa Blanca or some of the nearby Islands. Those islands have quite pricey accommodation, are very busy in January, and have very limited internet. South of Cartagena old town there is a clock tower which leads through to Getsemani, which is a popular place to stay because it’s generally cheaper than Cartagena old town and is still quite character-full.

Pictured above is a Toukan. This one was very tame, and had a really cheeky character. He would try to steal my food and peck at the dogs in the hostel.
